La creatura di MARIO DI DONATO, artista che divide la sua creativita' tra musica e pittura, nasce verso la fine degli anni 80 ma è bene precisare che musicalmente DI DONATO aveva già iniziato nel lontano 1967 con il gruppo beat "i Picchiati" per proseguire con "I Perfetti" fino al 1970. MARIO trova però la sua vera prima band rock nel 1972 con i "RESPIRO DI CANE" band veramente pesante e sconvolgente per l'epoca nella quale si possono ascoltare riferimenti ad uno dei più grandi gruppi rock del mondo ovvero gli americani Grand Funk Railroad. Qui' avviene l'incontro col bassista Enio Nicolini, nacque così un sodalizio artistico che dura ancora oggi. Nel 75 entra nei "UN VASO DI FOLLIA", in pratica una cover band di Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Hendix, Cream...poi nel 1979 insieme a Nicolini formano gli "UT/UNREAL TERROR" dove, da una ispirazione del cantante nasce lo pseudonimo "THE BLACK" dovuto al look ed allo stile chitarristico unico e personalissimo di MARIO che presto si rende conto di dover formare una band che gli possa permettere di suonare veramente la musica che sente sempre più nascere dentro se, cosi' crea i grandi "REQUIEM." Con questo gruppo MARIO può suonare una nuova forma di heavy metal cantato in latino che definisce "METAL MENTIS" ascoltabile in opere come "EX VOTO", "VIA CRUCIS" e "LIVE" tutte pubblicate dalla Minotauro. Quasi in contemporanea con i REQUIEM, MARIO sfoga la sua esigenza artistica creando la sua propria band e naturalmente la chiama "THE BLACK" il cui esordio avviene nel 1988 con "RELIQUARIUM", prosegue con "INFERNUS, PURGATORIUM et PARADISUS" e con "ABBATIA ST. CLEMENTIS" che nel 1993 chiude la prima parte della storia dei THE BLACK, infatti nel 1995 avviene l'incontro con l'etichetta genovese Black Widow Records che si concretizza con l'album "REFUGIUM PECCATORUM". Con questo album, e con il supporto della BWR, il suono di MARIO si fa' ancora più oscuro e sabbattiano raggiungendo l'apice di creatività e profondità con l'ottimo e sconvolgente album "APOCALYPSIS" del 1996. In questo album la musica heavy-doom si incontra in qualche modo col progressivo denotando una maturazione artistica veramente ampia che continua col successivo "GOLGOTHA" nel 2000 dove sono presenti due cover di band come i CORVI e ROVESCIO DELLA MEDAGLIA, due gruppi che hanno rappresentato una forte influenza per MARIO. In questo periodo la band suona parecchie date dal vivo ed appare allo show televisivo "HELP" del famoso condutture Red Ronnie dove presenta un eccellente brano inedito "OBSCURA NOCTE". La band è invitata a suonare nel celebre festival tedesco "Headbanger Open Air" dove riscuote un incredibile successo, fans da tutto il mondo accolgono il gruppo con esaltanti ovazioni ed i componenti del gruppo sono felicemente costretti a firmare centinaia di alum. Il gruppo partecipa anche a due progetti ideati dalla BWR, il "TRIBUTO AI BLACK WIDOW", con una eccelente versione del loro classico "Sacrifice" ed a "E TU VIVRAI NEL TERRORE" monumentale doppio album dedicato agli Horror Movies, con una splendida versione di "Suspiria" dei Goblin. La creativià di un artista dello spessore di DI DONATO pare inarrestabile sia sotto il profilo musicale che della pittura, infatti oltre a ricevre numerosi premi e riconoscimenti a livello internazionale per le sue opere pittoriche, il nostro chitarrista e cantante si spinge sempre più avanti musicalmente spinto dai ragazzi della BWR che vogliono ottenere il massimo possibile dalla sua sublime arte. Nascono così due opere in contemporanea "PECCATIS NOSTRIS" e "CAPISTRANI PUGNATOR" che escono separatamente in vinile ed insieme su Compact Disc nel 2004. Il Doom Metal Mentis dei THE BLACK è ai massimi livelli espressivi, nessuno aveva mai osato tanto musicalmente in questo genere. Soprattutto in "CAPISTRANI PUGNATOR", dedicata alla potente statua del Guerriero di Capestrano, sotto la quale hanno sostato meravigliati i potenti del mondo, la musica tocca vertici impensabili riuscendo a coniugare musica metal con la meraviglia del progressive ed anche del folk medioevale...Terminiamo questa breve biografia dei THE BLACK giungendo proprio nel 2010, anno in cui MARIO DI DONATO viene invitato da STEVE SYLVESTER a suonare 2 tracce sull'album di debutto "THE SHINING DARKNESS" dei "SANCTA SANCTORUM" band formata dallo stesso STEVE SYLVESTER, esce poi per la BLOODROCK RECORDS, escono un doppio CD "THE STORY" che raccoglie tutta la discografia dei REQUIEM e soprattutto "GORGONI" la nuova opera dei THE BLACK. CAPOLAVORO, questa volta non c'è altro termine per definire questo album lungamente progettato e pensato nel tempo da MARIO DI DONATO. Non credo si possano in poche righe descrivere tutte le senzazioni e le vibrazioni magiche che scaturiscono dai solchi di queste nuove composizioni che sanno di arcano e toccano il sole, la morte e la vita oltre la morte. Lo stile chitarristico di MARIO è sempre più personale, toni bassi e riffs irregolari ma esaltanti, si fondono con la sua voce salmodiante che recita testi il latino nei quali la speranza e la paura si fondono alla perfezione. Visioni crepuscolari, elevazioni spirituali, melodie epiche ed esaltanti creano una musica che ormai non è neanche più definibile heavy o doom, tanto la sua grandezza ci lascia meravigliati, sconvolti e ci costringe solo ad ascoltarla in silenzio. Nel dicembre del 2010 viene insignito dell'importante Internazionale "PREMIO DANTE ALIGHIERI" che gli viene assegnato come musicista Rock, per aver contribuito alla diffusione del buon nome dell'Abruzzo, oltre i confini della stessa, mai nessuno prima di lui era arrivato ad un risultato simile. After 3 decades of his unique brand THE BLACK is the most important Italian Heavy Doom band. The moniker was adopted by Mario Di Donato that called himself “THE BLACK" in his Metal band “REQUIEM” just before “THE BLACK” project. The Band was founded in 1988 by Mario Di Donato, former band leader of “UNREAL TERROR” and the "REQUIEM" who is widely known on the international Rock scene. Mario writes all the band's texts and music and paint himself the bands album cover. THE BLACK play a Mystic and Artistic Heavy, which is sung in Latin to blend Rock and Art together. Art, music and mysticism are the essence of the artistic journey of Mario "The Black" Di Donato. The pictorial art of Mario Di Donato was born in the 70s and led him to be recognized and appreciated throughout the world. He has coined his art in "Fantastic Art of the Soul" (Ars Mentis). Also the parallel adventure, the music, has this art, has to be indivisible and inalienable, and Mario Di Donato coined their music "Metal Of Soul" (Metal Mentis). All this makes him the forerunner of a new international movement “Art and Soul's Metal” (Ars et Metal Mentis).THE BLACK's first album, RELIQUARIUM was released in 1988. "Infernus, Paradisus et Purgatorium" the 2nd album was released in the 1990. The 3rd "ABBATIA ST. CLEMENTIS" in 1993 closes the first part of the story of THE BLACK, in fact in 1995 he met his Historic label Black Widow Records that takes a concretization of this meet with the album "REFUGIUM PECCATORUM". With this album, and with the support of the BWR, the sound of Mario becomes even more obscure and sabbathian, reaching the pinnacle of creativity and depth with the excellent album "APOCALIPSYS" in 1996. In this album the heavy doom music is encountered in some way with the progressive and a truly shocking development as a great artist who continues with the next "GOLGOTHA" in 2000, there are two Italian covers one of the band “CORVI” and the other one of “IL ROVESCIO DELLA MEDAGLIA” two bands that represented a strong influence for MARIO DI DONATO. In this period the band played several gigs and appears on Italian's TV show "HELP" of the famous Red Ronnie, where he presented an excellent new song "OBSCURA NOCTE". The band was invited to play in the famous German festival "Headbangers Open Air" where they enjoyed an incredible success. The thickness creativity of an artist like MARIO DI DONATO seems unstoppable, in his paintings and music, in fact he receives numerous internationally awards for hes paintings. After born two works in one "PECCATIS NOSTRIS" and "CAPISTRANI PUGNATOR" out on vinyl separately and together on CD in 2004. The Metal Mentis Doom of THE BLACK is now at the highest expression levels, no one had ever dared so much musically in this genre. Especially in "CAPISTRANI PUGNATOR", dedicated to the powerful statue of the Capestrano's Warrior, where the mighty of the worlds have stopped by and been marvel, the music touches the top, unthinkable managing to combine metal music with the wonder of progressive and even medieval folk. In 2010 MARIO DI DONATO collaborated with the doom band SANCTA SANCTORUM founded by Steve Sylvester (DEATH SS) where he played two songs on their debut album “The Shining Darkness”. We arrive now at the last great THE BLACK album “GORGONI” out in 2010 in Vinyl for BLACK WIDOW RECORDS (A special very limited edition Lp with the cover in real canvas) and Cd. Meanwhile in december 2010 MARIO DI DONATO receive in Pescara (Italy) an INTERNATIONAL AWARD the “PREMIO DANTE ALIGHIERI”, as Musician for helping to spread the good name of the ABRUZZO region beyond the borders of itself. THE BLACK keep with his music magical sensations and vibrations resulting from the grooves of these new compositions that taste arcane and touch the sun, death and life after death. MARIO's guitar playing become always more personal, doom riffs, some irregular but also exciting, blend with his voice sung in Latin where hope and fear are combined to perfectly. Crepuscular visions, spiritual ecstasy, epic melodies create exciting music that is perhaps no longer defined heavy or doom, his greatness leaves us amazed, shocked and just forces us to listen in silence.
